Carpets of "Karabakh" Type

Karabakh type of carpets is subdivided into three groups:

1. Karabakh group. Carpets of following regions are included into this group:
a) Barda. This region is famous for such pile carpets as Barda, khankarvand, aran, chelebi, buinuz, daryanur, achma-yumma, shabalybuta, balyg as well as flat woven Shedde, Varni and Zili. Old masters named the carpets of this group as "Arania". Nakhichevan carpet is also included in this group due to its technical and artistic resemblance.
b) Agjabedi. Here are spread such pile carpets as Lemberan, Karabakh, Khantirme as well as flat woven carpets Jejim.

2. Shusha group. Such well-known carpets as Malybeili, Lampa, Bagchadagyuller, Sakhsydagyuller, nelbekigyul, Gyulailyg, munjug and zarmakhal are woven here.

Karabakh, particularly Barda carpetry, has a very ancient history which had begun in the second half of the XVIII century in the town of Shusha. That is why most of the art critics considered Karabakh carpets to be Shusha ones.

3. Jebrail group. Such well known carpets as Khanlyg, Karagoyunlu, Gubatly, Kyurd as well as flat-wovn carpets Palas and Kilim are included into this group.

Above mentioned carpets of Karabakh type and its three groups (Karabakh, Jabrail, and Shusha) are similar according to their technological and artistic features. Karabakh carpets are notable due to various compositions and geometrized floral elements. Carpet completset "Dast-khali-gebe" is widespread in Karabakh.

In spite of average and low density Karabakh carpets obtained a durable stuff and thickness. As an example of Karabakh complete-set "Dast-khai-gebe" we can mention a large fine carpet "Khali-gebe" with a light-brown ground, with an area of 40 square meters woven under the guidance and participation of the famous Azerbaijan petress of the XIX century Khurshud Banu Natavan

It should be noted, that artistic peculiarities and weaving methods of Karabakh carpets are roughly the same as the features of Tabriz carpets. Karabakh carpets are of larger size, than those of other types. Usually they are manufactured with a square from 2 to 20 square meters. Sometimes one can meet carpets of 25 - 30 square meters. The density of Karabakh carpets varies from 30x30 to 40x40, that is from 90,000 to 160,000 knots in a square meter. Sometimes there are carpets of more than 200,000 knots per square. The height of the pile of of Karabakh carpets is from 6 to 10 mm. The composition of Karbakh carpets is more complicated than that of Gyanja-Kazakh ones. The ornament here consists of geometrized plants. Karabakh carpets distinguished themselves by the brilliance of colours and multi-colourness. Golden yellow, scarlet, purple, and pink - these colors are mostly used in the carpets of this zone.
