Carpets of "Kuba-Shirvan" Type

Carpets of Kuba-Shirvan type are subdivided into three groups:
1. Kuba Group. A big popularity obtained such carpets of Kuba group as: Kokhna Kuba, Kuba, Alpan, Khyrdagyulchichi, Alchagyulchichi and sumakhs of Kuba group.

a) Divichi. Such carpets as Garagashly, Shakhnazarli, Mollakamally, Lyajadi, Pirabedil, Biliji, Ugakh, Charakh gained a particular fame.
b) Gonakhend - Such carpet compositions as Oruj, Afurja, Erfi, Gymyl, Jek, Gyryz, Jimi, Khashi, Gonakhend, Arsalan, Khan, Salmesoyud, - are widely precailing in this region.

2. Shirvan Group. This group encompasses the following districts of carpet making.
a) Shemakha. Such carpets as Hirvan, Kabystan, Shemakha, Israfil, and Arjiman are widespread here.
b) Maraza. Such carpets as Maraza, Nubar, Ghukanly, Jygyrly, and Hemjeli are famous here.
c) Akhsu. Here are well-known Bijo, Gashed, and Pirgasanly.
d) Kyurdamir. Here are woven particularly such carpets as Kyurdamir, Shilyan and Sor-Sor
e) Kazimagommed. In this district, Gajikabul, Shiralibek carpets, as well as Palases and Kilims are well-known. Kabala and Salyan carpets, analogous to Shirvan carpets by their artistic and technological peculiarities, also refer to Kazimagommed district.

3. Baku group. Undermentioned carpets refer to this group:
a) Apsheron peninsula: Such carpets as Baku, Khilabuta, Khilaafshan, Surakhany, Novkhany, Geradil, Kala, and Fatmai got a wide popularity.
b) Khizy. We may mark in this district such carpets as Fyndygan and Gaadi as well as Zili, which are manufactured here in a big quantitiy. In spite of similar technology in these three groups (Kuba, Shirvan, and Baku), ornamental designers are very different. Composition of the carpets of Kuba group is more complicated than of Shirvan and Baku carpets, excluding Baku carpets Khilabuta and Khilaafshan.

Images of men, animals, and articles of household are met on Shirvan carpets more frequently than on Kuba and Baku ones. Some designes of border stripes of Kuba-Shirvan group carpets are met in architectural ornaments. Carpets of Kuba-Shirvan type are usually of a small size, with an area of not more than 1-4 square meters,a nd sometimes it can be 10-15 square meters, exceptionally - 20 square meters.

The density of the carpets of Kuba-Shirvan type is usually from 40x40 to 55x55. It means that there are from 160000 to 300000 knots in a square meter. In principle, the carpets of Kuba-Shirvan type possess rich and complex ornamentation, hard and harmonious color, anr are woven by "dolama ilme" "gulabi ilme" and "gerdis" methods. The pile of Kuba-Shirvan carpets is dense, soft and not high. The height of the pile varies from 3 to 6 cm.
