Cappadocia

Derinkuyu Undergound City

Location: 29 kms from Nevsehir. Underground city located in Derinkuyu 29,5 kms far away from Nevsehir i sone of the largest and developed settlement compared to its equivalents in Cappadocia region. Underground city has 8 floors and 85 meter depth and living areas here comprise of kitchen, sheds, dining hall and winery besides a missionary school that does not exist in other underground cities. Derinkuyu Underground city opened touristic use with Kaymakli Underground city and today only 1/10 of it can be visited.

Zelve

Location: It was built on the steep slope of Aktepe, 5 kms from Avanos, 1 km from Pasabaglari. Zelve ancient site which consists of three valleys is the place where the fairy chimneys are found most frequently. Just like Uchisar, Goreme, Cavusin it is not known when the life in the digged rocks begun. Zelve had been one of themost important living and religious centers of the Christians especially in 9th and 13th centuries. The first religious seminars are given to priests in this region also.

Dark Church

Location: Soganli Valley. The reason for the building to be named as the dark church is the small amount of light it takes from a very small window in its nartex part. For this reason, the colors of the frescs are still very live. The church and the nartex has rich decors bearing Christ cycle and bible. The dark church dates back to the end of the 11th century and beginning of the 12th century.

Tokali Church

Location: Goreme. The New Tokali is a horizontally rectangular planned, simple cradle vault. On the east wall there are 4 columns attached to each other by arcades. There's an elevated corridor behind the arcades, and after the corridor there located the main apse and the two apsides. The cycles of Jesus on the cradle vaulted aisle is embroidered mostly in blue and red colors according to chronological order. The Lapis Blue is the most significant feature that distinguished the Tokali Church from the others. At the horizontal aisle there're scenes from the life of the Saint Basil, the depictions of various saints and mosly the scenes from regarding the miracles of Jesus. The church is dated in the en of the 10th century and the beginning of the 11th century.

Ihlara Valley

Location: One may go to the valley by making a turn at 11kms of Aksaray-Nevsehir highway. Cracks and hollows formed by absorbing of lavas having higher density of basalt and andesit spewed out from Hasandagi bas been formed canyon. 14kms length valley starts from Ihlara and ends Slime. Valley's height sometimes reaches 100-150 meters. There are countless caves tombs, shelters and churches engraved into the rocks along the valley. Some shelters and churches are connected each other with tunnels as in underground cities. The best protected churches located in Ihlara Valley are Agacalti, Purenliseki, Kokar, Yilanli and Kirkdamalti Churches. Ihlara Valley leads as a religious center instead of a settlement. Churches engraved both sides of the valley amazes visitors.

Agacalti Church

Location: Ihlara Valley Cross planned, domed, the arms of the cross are cradle vaulted, 3 apses. The main apse and south side apse had collapsed. The entrance to the church is via this collapsed main apse. Because of the relief which is on the wall just opposite of the entrance, the building is also called as St. Daniel church. Dates back to 9-11 centuries.

Serpent's Church

Location: Ihlara Valley. The cross planed having cradle vault and absis. There monk tombs in chapel located in north wall. Church has been taken this name due to the scene about four naked reprobate women being attacked by snakes on west wall. Serpent's Church is dated end of 9th century.

Old Gumus

Location: It is 8 km to the north-east of Nigde, across from the old Andaval road, in the town called Gumusler which is located at the 4th km of Nigde-Kayseri road.
The entrance to the 10th century monastry is through a vaulted gate. On the west, south and east of the monastry courtyard, there are rock carved chambers and on the north is the church. The church has a cross plan, a central dome supported by four columns, three apses and a cross vaulted ceiling.
