KasThe town of Kas, some 29 miles from Demre, has probably been the fastest rising attraction as a tourist destination in the area, and has smartened itself up considerably in recent years. The town of Antiphellus began to develop in Hellenistic times and by the Roman period was the leading city of the region. The well preserved Hellenistic theater, with the Mediterranean as its astounding backdrop, stands less than a mile west of the town. Rock-cut and sarcophagus-type Lycian tombs can be seen on the hillside above. KalkanKalkan, much smaller than Kas, has also become increasingly popular in recent years and has built up its harbor to attract yachting tourists. The waters around Kalkan are a favourite for spear fishermen and abound in natural fresh water springs that make diving a fascinating experience. Historic LocationsMyra (Demre)Myra is a city carved into the rocks facing the sea. It may be the most beautiful example of its kind in Anatolia. It is understood from widely spread ruins, graves and Lykian scripts that the city dates back to the 5th century B.C. In 17 A.D. Emperor Germanicus visited Myra with his wife Agrippina. St. Paul also visited Myra in 60 A.D. The 2nd century A.D. is the period when Myra was bestowed the honor of being a metropolis and a great development took place. The city, under the Byzantium rule in 4th and 5th centuries was an important religious and administrative center. SimenaKalekoy is a peninsula located on Old Simena Antique Town. Plenty of traces from ancient civilizations can be seen in Simena, which has a history starting from Likya. The theatre and the city walls which were cut in rocks are some of those traces. There are no direct land routes to Kalekoy. After you reach the dock you can follow the paths between the houses and gardens to get to the castle on top of the hill. In this castle which were used at the middle age, there are 7 seat rows for 300 people. Kekova IslandThe Kekova Island which also gave its name to the location is just in front of the Simena, between Kas and Demre (Myra). Thus the island partially submerged into the sea, it is called as "Sunken City". LetoonIt is believed that Letoon was the cultural center of Lykian city state. Because the festivals were taken place here during that period. The name Letoon comes from the legends. The King of the gods Zeus falls in love with Leto who gets pregnant to their twin children. Leto, being afraid of jealous wife of Zeus, runs away and comes to Delos. Here, she gives birth to their children Apollo and Artemisia, runs further away this time to Lykia, until reaching to the shores of Anatolia. The wolves she met on the road guide her to Xanthos River. Leto, being grateful to them, dedicates the river to Apollo and names the area known as "Termilles" until ten, "Lykia" a word derived from "lykos" meaning wolf in Greek. There is a Greek type theatre from Hellenistic period on the north of Letoon. The doors on east and west of theatre that stage area was destroyed, were decorated with Doric frescos. |
