TroyLocation: Hisarlik (Canakkale). Troy is a tumulus form settlement in Hisarlik 6 kms inwards the point that Dardanelle Strait sets out to Aegean Sea. In 3rd and 2nd thousands BC, it was a lively cultural capital and the center of a kingdom ruling settled agricultural societies. At the end of 13th century BC, it was damaged by a big fire. It is assumed that this fire started at the end of famous Trojan Wars. The region is chronologically ruled by Persians, Alexander the Great, Selucidis, Kingdom of Pergamon and Rome. As a result of excavacations, 9 stowed settlements consist of 4 architectural layers representing 7 different cultures were found in Troy. The Trojan horse legend related to the most bloody war of the history assumed to made in the region, is one of the most effective legends of the world. Athena TempleAthena Altar, built on the highest point of the Acropolis (236 m height) in BC 530, had taken its name from Athena, daughter of Zeus and one of 12 Olympos gods, the Goddess of War. Athena Altar is essentially as being the unique archetype, built in the Doric style in Antique Age in Anatolia and as it has relief frize. It is impossible to describe the visual magnificience that appears when the wonderful view of the moon light leaking through the altar and the first light of the sunrise gliding among the ruins unite with the scene of Edremit Bay. When you see the view, you can realize why this wonderful place had been chosen for building the altar. Only the two stepped platform has remained until today. It is possible to come across the Doric column heads, column bases and other architectural ruins around. The altar was formed in a heads of total 34 columns were found in good condition. The 4.30 mt high columns without the heads, become 4,78 mt including the heads. |
