 Ebru Types
BATTAL
The term means big and refers to marbling where the large paint drops sprinkled on the bath are transferred to the paper as they are, without any manipulation. If all the spots are small, its name is 'TARZIKADIM' (the antique style). One can also combine the two layers: first, large drops of color pushing each other into veines and sprinkled over it small drops containing less oxgall fluid or, for white drops.
SOMAKI
The only ebru to take its name from a marble extracted from Soma in the Aegean region.
GELGIT
The zig zag effect is obtained by combing the battal horizontally and then going up and down vertically regular intervals with a pointed tool or with horse hair as the old masters did.
TARAKLI GELGIT
Floating paints on the bath combed with a steady hand; then with a pointed tool pulled downwards upwards.
BÜLBÜL YUVASI
Literally means 'nightingale's nest'. Floating battal is combed and made into circles with a pointed tool. This classic pattern in different sizes seems to be present since the 16th century. It is the original of socalled 'French curl'.
SAL
Finely combed colours are subsequently manipulated here and there with a pointed tool in the shape of leaves to get a Paisley shawl effect.
KUMLU
Single gray or blue colour with a sandy grained look. Due to its neutral aspect, it is usually found as a frame around the calligraphic panels called 'levha'
HAFIF
Pale color ebru. It was preferred as support for calligraphy and official documents; it didn't interfere with writing yet it provided a fine texture not allowing for corrections or forging of any kind.
